Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on National Acadian Day

August 15, 2023

Ottawa, ON — The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on National Acadian Day:

“Across the Maritimes, the sounds of bells, whistles, and horns will fill the streets as Acadians come together to express their pride for their heritage with the Grand Tintamarre. Together, they celebrate the long history that unites them and the strength of their unique identity.

“Since their arrival on our shores over 400 years ago, Acadians have been an integral part of the Canadian story. The Acadian’s respect and consideration for the occupied land created a harmonious coexistence with the Mi’kmaq people. The exchange of knowledge of the land, survival skills, and cultural traditions greatly enriched both communities and played a role in shaping the lively Acadian culture celebrated today. Throughout their history, they have fought many battles and endured many struggles. Even after the horrors of the Expulsion, the Acadian people never gave up, returning to the Maritimes to rebuild their communities and claim their place in the Canadian story. In the face of unimaginable hardship and adversity, they have been champions of freedom, fighting at every turn to protect their language, heritage, and identity.

“Today, the Acadian people are a core part of the Canadian family – strengthening our ties to the Francophonie and sharing the joy of their culture with their neighbours. Across our country, they have built prosperous communities that brim with vibrant and meaningful traditions.

“In these communities and beyond, the powerful spirit of the Acadian people is infectious, inspiring francophones across Canada to help preserve our incredible French inheritance for the next generation.

“No matter where they are celebrating today, Acadians remain connected to one another, their strong roots, and the fierce pride they share for their remarkable heritage. On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, Happy National Acadian Day to everyone!”
