The NDP-Liberal Alliance and the War on Religious Charities
In recent weeks, serious concerns have emerged again about a federal government proposal that sought to strip churches and other places of worship of their charitable status. While Parliament has been prorogued and this proposal has now died with the end of the last session, it is critical to bring attention to the issue because it reveals the true priorities of the NDP. By supporting the Liberals in this effort, the NDP made it clear that they do not stand for everyday Canadians who rely on the services these charitable organizations provide. This attack on faith-based charities was not just an assault on religious organizations—it was an attack on the support networks that serve our most vulnerable citizens.
The Liberal Party of Canada campaigned on a promise to revoke charitable status from religious organizations, and with the unwavering support of the NDP through their supply-and-confidence agreement, they have spent the last three years attempting to fulfill that promise. If they had succeeded, it would have dealt a devastating blow to the very organizations that provide food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless, and mental health support to those in crisis. The NDP’s support of this dangerous idea only proves that they are not a party of the people but a party of radical policies that hurt Canadians and dismantle essential community support systems.
Canada’s charitable sector is the backbone of many communities. More than 86,000 registered charities contribute to public benefit activities that reach into nearly every corner of Canadian life. These charities are granted crucial tax exemptions so they can continue their mission of service, from education to social support, crisis intervention, and beyond. Faith communities—whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, or others—play a vital role in strengthening our society. They operate food banks, emergency shelters, addiction recovery programs, youth mentorship, and countless other initiatives that would otherwise be left underfunded or unavailable.
The Conservative Party strongly believes in protecting the tax-exempt status of religious charities and recognizes the invaluable contributions they make to society. We stand firmly against any attempt to undermine the ability of faith-based organizations to serve their communities. While the Liberal-NDP/Alistair MacGregor coalition continues to push for policies that undermine community support, Conservatives remain dedicated to defending these vital institutions and ensuring that they can continue their good work without government interference.
This fight is far from over. If you believe in protecting charitable organizations and the vital services they provide, we urge you to stay informed, speak up, and stand with us in defending the values that make Canada strong.
The dozens of charitable organizations in Cowichan-Malahat-Langford ‘Thank you’ for being an active part of our community and for your unwavering support in protecting these essential institutions.
