Deficit Spending and Rising Debt: A Reckless Path Forward

  • Escalating Deficit: Canada’s annual operating deficit has ballooned to $61 billion (for the fiscal year ending March 31,2024, compared to $35.3 billion for the previous fiscal year). This is $21.8 billion higher than the government’s own projection. Our national debt has risen dramatically to almost 1.4 trillion dollars! This reckless spending isn’t just an abstract number—it’s a burden that taxpayers will be forced to carry for decades. With every passing year of irresponsible financial management, the cost of servicing this debt continues to grow, meaning less money is available for critical services that Canadians rely on.
  • Impact on Canadians: The Trudeau Liberal government, propped up by the NDP, has led Canada down a path of unsustainable debt. As the government borrows more, interest payments on our national debt have skyrocketed to $46.5 billion annually—a sum that nearly equals the $49.4 billion spent on the Canada Health Transfer. That means nearly as much taxpayer money goes to foreign and domestic lenders as it does to ensuring proper healthcare access for Canadians. This reckless financial mismanagement isn’t helping struggling families—it’s making life more expensive and eroding essential services.
  • NDP’s Role: Alistair MacGregor and his NDP colleagues have blindly supported Trudeau’s tax-and-spend agenda, rubber-stamping policies that have driven up inflation and debt. While they claim to stand for working-class Canadians, their actions tell a different story: increasing deficits lead to higher interest rates, more expensive groceries, soaring rent costs, and a lower quality of life for every Canadian family. The NDP’s unwavering support of deficit spending does nothing but weaken Canada’s financial future while forcing families to pay the price.

Our Conservative Solution:

Conservatives will restore fiscal sanity. We believe in responsible economic stewardship—ensuring taxpayer dollars are used wisely and not squandered on ideological pet projects. We will rein in out-of-control spending, reduce the deficit, and lower the financial burden on hardworking Canadians. Unlike the Liberal-NDP coalition, we believe that every dollar taken from Canadians should be treated with respect and used to strengthen, not weaken, our country. Canada needs leaders who will protect future generations from crushing debt, and Conservatives are the only ones ready to do the job.
