Accountability Check No. 1

Bill C-5: A Soft-on-Crime Disaster

Bill C-5, supported by the Liberal-NDP coalition, has made significant changes to Canada's criminal justice system, particularly concerning serious crimes. This bill eliminates mandatory minimum sentences for many serious offenses, including:

  • Firearm offenses
  • Drug trafficking
  • Aggravated assault
  • Sexual assault
  • Human trafficking

Additionally, Bill C-5 expands the use of house arrest for dangerous offenders, allowing criminals convicted of serious crimes to serve their sentences at home rather than in prison.

  • Alistair MacGregor and the NDP voted in favor of this bill, which makes it easier for violent criminals to avoid serving time in prison.

  • Conservatives strongly opposed this bill, warning that it would lead to an increase in gang violence and drug-related crimes.

The Consequences:

  • Rising crime: Repeat offenders are being released and committing more crimes in our communities, such as Duncan, where crime has escalated.

  • Fentanyl crisis worsens: Drug dealers now face weaker penalties, allowing them to continue profiting from illegal activities without facing significant consequences.

Our Conservative Plan:

  • Reinstate mandatory sentences for serious offenses.
  • End house arrest for violent criminals.
  • Restore law and order to protect our communities.
